Service Connection (VA)

Treatment

Quick Summary

What it isService connection is the legal determination by the VA that a veteran’s current medical condition was incurred during, caused by, or aggravated by their military service. A service-connected condition is eligible for VA disability compensation and healthcare priority.

Why it mattersService connection is the gateway to VA disability benefits. A veteran with an uncompensated sleep disorder that is service-connected may be eligible for 0-100% disability rating, free VA healthcare, and priority access to specialized treatment. Many veterans with service-related sleep disorders never file because they don’t know the pathway exists.

Think of it like thisService connection is the VA’s formal acknowledgment that the military made a withdrawal from your health account. It opens the account to claim reimbursement.

Formal Definition:

Under 38 U.S.C. § 1110 and 38 CFR § 3.303, service connection requires: (1) a current diagnosis of a disability; (2) in-service incurrence or aggravation of the disease or injury; and (3) a nexus between the current disability and the in-service disease or injury. Secondary service connection under 38 CFR § 3.310 allows connection through a pre-existing service-connected condition that caused or aggravated the claimed condition.
