Formal Definition:

A state of reduced cognitive performance and increased subjective effort following prolonged cognitive activity or sleep deprivation, characterized by decrements in sustained attention, working memory, response inhibition, and decision-making.

MechanismCognitive fatigue arises from multiple sources: depletion of metabolic resources in prefrontal cortex, accumulation of adenosine and other inhibitory signals, altered functional connectivity in attention networks, and reduced motivational salience. Sustained vigilance tasks reveal fatigue more reliably than complex tasks.

Scientific ConsensusCognitive fatigue produces measurable decrements on sustained-attention tasks (PVT, vigilance batteries). Subjective fatigue ratings dissociate from objective performance, particularly under chronic sleep restriction. Sleep is the only definitive recovery for fatigue from sleep loss.
